Adult Adoption

Many people, including lawyers, do not know that it is possible for an adult to adopt another adult as their child. Their are many reasons one might want to adopt an adult person or be adopted by an adult person. Some of the reasons Luke Barteaux has seen in the past include:

  • Reestablishing the legal parent child relationship that was severed in a prior court case when the child didn’t have a say as a minor.
  • Establishing the legal connection to a person that has raised you like their own child but wasn’t able to adopt you as a child.
  • Some go through adoptions for inheritance purposes.
  • Many people consult with Mr. Barteaux about adopting a child when they are in their late teens just to find out if they wait a year or two it will cost much less and the court process is much shorter.
  • While a traditional adoption of a minor or stepparent adoption of a minor may take as long as a year depending on if it’s contested, but an average adult adoption from start to finish may take as little as one month from the time you meet your attorney until you walk out of the hearing with a final decree of adoption.
